Pacific Grove was founded as a Christian Retreat in 1875. In the book Piney Paradise, by Lucy McLane, the author documented her research into the Pacific Grove Retreat Association meeting minutes and her interviews with the people who attended the first retreats in Pacific Grove. Quoting Ms. McLane’s Piney Paradise, “In the early days of the Seaside Christian Association, innumerable prayer meetings were held out of doors; and the favorite location was the point beyond Central Park overlooking the sea which Retreaters called Lovers of Jesus Point. Just when the name changed to Lover’s Point no one can verify.”
We wanted to document the history of Pacific Grove’s Christian origins and the point we now know as Lover’s Point. Which was once informally known as Lovers of Jesus Point!
